AUSTRAC infringement notices
Received an AUSTRAC
infringement notice?
Most notices must be paid within 28 days. Here’s what to do next, and how Personr helps you fix the compliance gaps behind the notice so you don’t get another one.
What to do in the next 28 days
Step 1: Check what the notice is for
Step 1: Check what the notice is for
A notice lists each contravention, the amount and how to pay. Each contravention is a fixed penalty. Pay by the deadline and AUSTRAC can’t take you to court over those breaches, though it can still use other tools, like a remedial direction. Paying isn’t an admission of liability.

Step 3: Get advice if you want to contest it
Personr isn’t a law firm and can’t advise on your notice. If you think it’s wrong, talk to a lawyer before the deadline, or find an AML consultant in our directory.

Enrol with AUSTRAC if you haven’t, answer any outstanding AUSTRAC requests, and get your AML/CTF program, customer checks and reporting in place. AUSTRAC says enrolment notices can accrue daily. Not sure if you need to enrol? Check our Tranche 2 guide.

Check the amount on your notice
Compare it with AUSTRAC’s published rates. A few quick questions.
Pay within 28 days (or any longer time AUSTRAC allows) and AUSTRAC can’t take you to court over those breaches, though it can still use other tools, like a remedial direction. Unpaid notices can go to the Federal Court.
In court, the maximum civil penalty is $36,400,000 per breach for a company. AUSTRAC says enrolment notices can accrue daily.
Estimate only, using AUSTRAC’s published rates: 60 penalty units per breach for a company or 12 for an individual, at $364 per unit for breaches from 1 July 2026 or $330 for breaches from 7 November 2024 to 30 June 2026. AUSTRAC decides how many breaches a notice covers, and some enrolment and registration notices can be higher. This isn’t legal advice.
